Man, that is a prize! wow
Steve, I'm pretty booked just about through the end of the year, we might have to put it off until January or February, but I would like to get a group together for Beer, Scotch and Cigars, I think it would be a blast. Maybe after the holidays I'll start a thread and get an idea as to who is interested.

Sounds great Dave! With my child due in the next week or so, it's going to be a few months before I can get away for a weekend anyway. Early next year sounds perfect!

Just got back from a business trip to New Orleans, had a day to kick around so drank on Glenlivet 12 year all day and smoked some local hand rolled cigars. I didn't mind it at all.
Drinking all this at the Old Absinthe House, me and another guy almost delved into the "Green Fairy", but decided not to.
I'm sure someone on here has had the stuff, opinions? I hate the taste of licorice.

I guess I may as well add to this convo..Working at The Dunes (the country club i work at) I have had the chance to learn quite a bit about Scotch as most of our members drink it quite often..I have found that Belevine (spelling?) is a very nice scotch. I have tried the 10 yr old and it was smooth with a hint of honey. Some of my personal favorites are Johnnie Walker Black and Famous Grouse both of which are blended. Now some people will argue which is better when it comes to single malt or blended..My personal opinion is both are great! lol..as I said Black label and Famous Grouse are very smooth and very tasty..and they both contain some of the same single malts..I believe both use Talisker as a base malt..Now when it comes to pairing cigars and scotch, I am still very new to that. But thus far I have found that any Maduro pairs very well and complimants most scotchs..but again that is just my opinion.

Famous Grouse is the most popular scotch in Scotland! But that's because of the price. Darn good for the $.
As for absinthe, I have a bottle or 2 laying around... I really enjoy the higher end stuff. & don't believe for a minute all that nonsense about it being hallucinogenic. I'll start a thread and explain it sometime soon.

I've heard it will give you a nice drunk feeling after only a few. I've had pastiche which i believe is loosely based on absinthe? I'd like to learn more on the subject.
I might try that famous grouse.

Okay. I finally got to try something other than Jameson's. I went out and picked up a bottle of The Macallan 12 year. I had a hard time with it. It's got some lingering taste to it, that my tastes aren't quite ready for. I don't know if it's the oakiness, but I'll have to work on developing a taste for it. Then, a friend of mine had me try Oban, which I loved. Can't wait to go out and buy a bottle! But I haven't been able to find it at the last couple liquor stores I checked.

Oban is a sweet scotch. Lots of sugars. Macallan 12 is a fine scotch. try putting a splash of water in it (which you should do with all scotch, just around a teaspoon full or less).

Thanks, Skip. I couldn't bring myself to add water to it, so I put in a couple of ice cubes. It's the same thing, I know, but it was easier to justify to myself. Much more tolerable for me.

I just picked up a couple bottles from the Duty Free shop on the way home from Cancun. One was from the U.K., i can't recall the name, but it's a Scotch Whisky blend. Not bad, but not great, but for $14, I can't argue. The other was $140. It's the Dewar's Signature Scotch, also a blend, but it retails locally for $225, so I got a good deal. It comes in a sweet looking wooden box, with a beautiful finish. It could easily be lines with spanish cedar and converted to a humidor in the future...if I want to go that route. I'll take pics when I get a chance, i can't find my camera battery charger, which is why I didn't take a single pic in Cancun. Doh!

Hey all..just thought I'd tell you all about this new Canadian whisky I tried last night..At least new to me, but its called Forty Creek. The guy at the liquor store told me about it. Its very smooth, has a nice taste and not as sweet as some Canadian whiskys. The cool part about it is I guess in taste testing it beat out Crown Royal, Crown Royal Reserve, Canadian Club and CC Reserve. For those who have not tried it I highly recommend it!

Can't remember if I've asked about this before, but has anyone tried Glenfiddich's after-dinner liqueur?
It tastes like their single malt, but wayyyyy sweeter. And its a straight sugar sweetness. I like it... very interesting but far too sweet for more than just a few sips.
Anyway, my wife had a taste on the Distillery tour when she was in Scotland and fell in love. We recieved a bottle as a wedding gift from some very good friends!

PiNa, I'll have to look for the Forty Creek, I'm intrigued, same goes for the Glenfiddich Chris, It sounds like something I might enjoy. I'm not big on sweets though, so it would probably last me forever, which is fine.
So, I leave for Cancun again next week so I'll be making another stop at the Duty Free...any suggestions on something to buy that isn't available in the states? I'll be looking at the Scotch section first, but last time I made two purchases and later saw them at my local liquor stores, so I was a tad disappointed.

If you have any interest in that Glenfiddich liqueur I suggest you look in duty-free. I don't remember the specifics but it is NOT distributed in the states for some reason. Our friends found it at a duty-free in Antigua.
Of course, when my wife was at the distillery a few years ago they asked where she's from. She said Texas, they go "Oh! Some lady in Texas orders two cases a year of this stuff!" So its not against any laws, you can have it imported direct, just... by the case
And btw, I agree with you. That stuff is tasty as hell, but it'll last me a lifetime! Also, look for the more expensive stuff while you're there. I'd definitely be shopping for rare/unique but I was pretty impressed with the price of the older Macallan's.

What I was thinking of doing was print a list of all the Single Malts that my local liquor store carries. They have a very extensive list, so if I find something that's not on there, I'll pick it up. thanks for the advice Chris!

I picked up a bottle of Old Pulteney 12 yr this weekend (for no good reason other than price) I enjoyed the slight saltiness and thought it was pretty smooth stuff. Any opinions?

It's a highland, but the saltiness is subdued and kind of nice.
I have a rookie palate so hopefully someone else can chime in. My wife liked the floral smell. (For her to say she liked the smell was huge, she doesn't like the smell of anything)

I picked up a bottle of Pinch 15 year old Scotch. It's blend but a tasty one. I would say it's any better than my favorite blend Dewars Signature which is a 12 year blend. Both are in the same price range. I just have a hard time spend $45 or more for a good single malt. I go in to the store thinking single malt and always come out with a blend. I'll spend $8-10 for a good cigar but won't do the same for a signle malt, what am I to do?
