View Full Version : When did you start smoking?

I smoked ciggies for around 8 years when I gave them up at around 24 (1977). Shortly afterwards I started smoking a pipe. I enjoyed it but it involved too much paraphernalia (tobacco, the tamper, bowl scrapers, lighters, filters) & I got an awful bite on my tongue (a common occurrence with a pipe because the tobacco is smoked so wet). One day I bought a pipe flavored cigar at a drug store and thought this would be my answer. Not too far afterwards I landed on the Italian anisette flavored cigars. After about a year of this I quit for a short while then someone gifted me my first hand-rolled. I loved it and have been hooked ever since. It turns out that cigar was in fact form Kennedy's stash. Jacqueline had given a few boxes to the family priest who performed the funeral and John used to smoke with. Later on my friends brother became friendly with this priest who became a Bishop in PA.
Anyway, that was roughly 28 years ago. So I've been smoking cigars for 28-30 years depending if you count the DeNobles.

little over 11 years now, started @ 15 wanted something to take for opening day of trout season, so me and 3 of my friends chipped in like $8 or 9 a piece to buy the box from Poor Richard's in Station Square in Pittsburgh. Burned my first one on the Loyalhanna Creek in Ligioner PA, didn't buy a cutter, so was cutting the cap with my filet knife, been hooked ever since, though it has gone from 1-2 a month to 1 a week, to 1-3 a day.

My brother and I would smoke some Garcia Vegas when he came to visit me at WVU in 1994. When my Dad, brother and I would get together (we lived far from each other), they'd get a celebratory cigar to mark the occassion. I never was that big on cigars until my ex suggested getting a few to have with coffee on our lazy weekend mornings or to take to the sports bar. I wouldn't be satisfied and enjoy them unless I knew everything about cigars, so I bled my local tobacconist for info then turned to the internet, finding ASC (and later CigarNexus), buying cigars off eBay (in the days before CI and CigarBid), and checking out the few manufacturers websites that were around back then.

So, about 14 years.

I started smoking at 16 with the occasional Swisher Sweet or Hav-A-Tampa. I tried cigars with pipe tobacco & hated them. I took a break from smoking and didn't smoke my first handmade cigar until 23. I bought a sampler bag at the local B&M and a cutter. I can't even tell you what was in the bag but I was hooked. Took yet another long break from cigars until about 2 years ago when I decided I couldn't do without them. I used to purchase 1 or 2 at a time and smoke them. I just recently decided that I would invest in a humidor and make an attempt at becoming a true aficionado. I have seen my consumption increase from 1 per month to at least 2 per week now. Still not on the level of guys like Skipper who have smoked cigars that are older than me (and I'm 33).

Great to hear everyone else's experiences. Happy Smoking

I started in 1998, while stationed in Korea. I was walking through the PX and they had a stand alone humidor filled with different cigars. I bought a Dunhill I didn't know one cigar from another it just looked good. I went back to my place and sat outside lit it up while I polished my boots. Man that was a great cigar. That hooked me and I've been enjoying cigars every since.

I have tried cigars off and on since I was around 16-17. Last year my wife bought me a humi. I try to keep 4 or 5 in it (it is a small humi). I like trying some different smokes. I have done a few samplers on line. I now smoke 1-3 cigars per week, Beale.

I started smoking cigars many years ago and stop for a few years--loss interest--I started playing golf again and picked them up again, That was around 12-15 years ago. I enjoy both and now have started my collection back up.Thought I would only have a 200 ct. Humi but with so many deals and great people I've met I had to start a coolerdor. It never stops once you start--I guess the correct word to me would be addicting.

I have never smoked anything but Cigars, not even cigarettes, and to be honest, I had never planned on it. I loved the smell, and figured if there was anything I would try it would be a cigar but I never had the desire. Then a girl from work whom I was a bit fond of was at the bar with me, and a few other friends, and she kept talking about craving a vanilla cigar. Well, I acted like I was going to the bathroom, hit the local cigar shop, and picked up a Havana Dreams Vanilla cigar. I also bought a cutter and grabbed some matches. I gave it to her, she cut it, lit it, and began smoking it and it smelled delicious. She, and another girl, kept telling me I should try it until I finally gave in. I had no clue how to smoke it, but I gave it a shot and successfully kept the smoke out of my lungs, which was my biggest deterrent from smoking in the first place. Well, it tasted delicious, the vanilla anyway. After that, I would pick one up every 4 or 5 weeks, smoke it at a party or the bar, good times. Then my buddy Travis got me to smoke an Arturo Fuente, and it was like a whole new world. Wow, a cigar that tastes ten times better, but without the mask of infused flavor. Don't get me wrong, I love vanilla, so occasionally i'll smoke a little CAO flavour cigarillo, but when I want a good, quality smoke, I knew what to get. Then I began to branch, and eventually Brian got me my first humidor as a groomsman gift and i started buying them like crazy. He also introduced me to Nubs, and now I have 4 humidors, less than a year from getting my first, and I buy cigars at a pretty high rate, especially considering I smoked my first only about 4 years ago.

Wow, this is on old thread, thanks for bumping it! :thumb:

I used to smoke cigars occasionally in high school (maybe two or three every month, 11-12 years ago), and quite a bit more in college and after college (at least one cigar a week).

I got into the hobby full force in the last 2-3 years with the purchase of a larger humidor and much more frequent smoking. :nub:

I started smoking cigars my freshman year of college, about 3 years ago. I used to smoke machine rolled stuff, and a year later for my birthday I got a hand rolled Acid. That one hooked me, and I stuck with that line until I met Sam at the Nub Launch in Chesapeake, VA this past summer. Nub Connecticut 460 started my interest in traditional cigars (no flavoring added), and my tastes have evolved significantly since then. I actually got my first humidor this past summer when Sam bombed my younger brother and I with boxes of nubs! So I've been smoking cigars since I was 19, maybe one or two a month if I'm in racing season, one a week if not.

I started smoking cigars when I was 18. We used to go up to a cigar bar / sandwhich shop (the garden in Nashua, NH) and watch monday night raw and smoke a cigar. Then I stopped for about 5 years and started back up last year.

I started smoking at 16 with my best friend, who is a year older than I am. Started with the Swishers then moved up to good stuff when I turned 18 and could actually buy. I hate cigarettes and am not a huge fan of pipes, which seem to be more work than enjoyment. My fiance bought me my first humidor for christmas a couple years ago and now I have 3! It's a somewhat expensive hobby for a college student, but I freakin love it!

I started smoking cigarettes in the beginning of college, and the occasional black and mild. Cigarettes trailed off when i got a "real job." Last year I was at the liquor store stocking up for my birthday party and they had a pretty impressive walk-in humi. I decided to pick up a few and see where the night took me.
Turns out that was the best decision I made... One girl we invited brought the dbag she was dating and it was good to be able to sit outside with "real friends" for a few hours and leave him elsewhere (otherwise I was gonna sock him). I'm smoking 3-5 a week right now and i've all but given up on cigarettes - they taste like ass compared to a good cigar but sometimes they're just easier (concerts, etc.... no indoor smoking in h-town)

I started smoking cigars three years ago when my son came to stay with us a year between college and graduate school. He started smoking cigars instead of cigarettes and since it takes so long to smoke one, we would sit out on the deck or porch together, shooting the breeze while he smoked one. So, I needed something to do also and I started smoking with him. That was one of the best years of my life. It was no longer a father/son thing, but something we could enjoy together, just two guys out for a smoke, solving all the problems of the heart and the world.

I started about a year and half ago. Cooking buddy gave me one. Never smoked prior to that. Bought a 20 count travel humi. That worked fine till a month ago. I ordered 25 on line. Counting the existing cigars that was not going to work. So I 'had to' get a 100 count box. Since then I have 1-2 a week.

15 years. I started smoking when I was 13. My parents sent me to Floriday to visit relatives for a month. My cousin who is a couple years older than me was smoking cigarettes, and of course I just wanted to be cool to him, so I picked up the habbit. In the past 5 years, I kept switching my cigarette types and brands because I was just sick of the taste. In the past year I would only smoke half a cigarette because the taste it left in my mouth was horrible.

On rare occasion over the past 10 or 11 years I would pick up a cigar. I don't know why, it was an impulse thing. Well in late 2008 I got deployed with the Army and we brought 2 different companies together and I met a lot of people who I had never met before. 2 of these guys now life long friends are cigar smokers. One day out at the smoke shack I was having a cigarette, and one of them having a cigar, I thought to myself...

That guy is actually enjoying that cigar. He is laid back, easy going, and genuinely envolved with that cigar. And it smells good too. I want that.

So I asked him where he got his cigars, and he turned me to a couple of websites. I ordered a humidor sampler, and have been hooked ever since. It has become my hobby and my obsession.

When I was 22 (about 5 years ago) I was visiting my aunt and uncle and after dinner at their country club we were having drinks and my uncle asked if I wanted to try a cigar. I said sure so he went and picked out a couple of Macanudo Crystal Cafe cigars for us. Showed me how to cut it, light it, and smoke it, and I've enjoyed cigars ever since. My consumption ranges depending on the seasons since I only smoke outside or at bars, but unless it's the dead of winter or the overbearing heat of summer (I live in Texas, hah), I usually enjoy 1-2 sticks on the weekend depending on my schedule and what I'm doing. When I find a new cigar that I like however (like the Nub about 3 weeks ago!), I'm itching to smoke another almost every night, haha.

I started smoking cigarettes when i was about 19. Smoked until i was about 25, and then quit, have smoked a cigarette now in almost 3 years. I started smoking cigars in March of 2009. When a buddy of mine offered me a it's a boy fuente, for my godson being born. I enjoyed it so much that i went to the store and bought a few cigars, then went back and that's when i discovered the Nub Cameroon. I loved it so much that later that week, i was craving another nub, i went back and got more nubs... and from there on the cigar collection was down hill slope... Now i just bought a pipe and a few different tobaccos but havent tried it yet as it hasn't came it yet.... So there's my story and i am sticking to it. :nub:

I always loved the smell of cigars growing up and that's what got me started. I never smoked cigarettes or anything else. Any time i went on vacation i would get to a cigar store, but i wouldn't know what i was buying. It was about a year ago i started to get serious. I went to the local cigar store and bought 3 sticks, A hdm epicure especial, partagas sd 4 and i can remember what the third was. Anyway i enjoyed them and found myself going back about twice a month to sample different sticks and thats how i got started. Now i would usually order about 40 - 60 cigars a month from an online dealer but i only smoke about 3 per week. I have 2 humi's and some tupperware humis now. i find the tupperware easier to regulate actually. ugly as hell tho

October 17th, 2009. Never smoked before that. At my friend's wedding he had a bunch of cigars laid out in a custom humidor box. (Corona cigars, custom labeled for his wedding) I always loved the smell of cigars, so I decided to try one. I was hooked after that. ^_^ I don't plan on smoking anything else except cigars/pipes.

I smoked my first hand rolled cigar last year @ a redskins game w/a buddy of mine. it was a preseason game so we got awesome seats for a steal and we had access to the Macanudo lounge so we figured why the hell not. We looked liked idiots bc we didnt know what we were doing but enjoyed it. It wasnt until about 7 months ago we started smoking more and exploring the different cigars out there. I generally smoke on the weekends prob 5 sticks in total and def have learned alot since our first time.

Started with cigarettes at 14-15, and smoked about a pack a day until 25, then I stopped everything for a few months, until I realized I really missed the smoke, but I wanted something that tasted better, and that I was not addicted to...I wanted to smoke when I wanted a smoke not when I 'needed' a smoke. So I was handed a Fuente and it's been great ever since then, I avg maybe 4-6 cigars a month now. I avg. about 10-12 in my humidor, trying to stock it with the 50-75 it says it holds LOL.....

Had my first cigar new years 92 -93.

Our family had a custom of celebrate New Years at my Grandmothers house. We would close down the street. After that we would start lightening fireworks untill about 12:30. We would do the rounds visiting the neighbors going house by house wishing everybody happy new years. Normally after we would sit in her front patio and have champaign and snacks. Many times I have seen my uncle smoking a cigar. Asked him if he could educate me on the ins and outs of smoking a cigar. He always said when the time is right.

The new years of 92/93 we did our usual rounds afterwards he told me to sit in the front patio and wait for him as he has a gift for me. He bought me 5 pack of partagas (cuban). He said "now is the time". He showed me how to cut it and to lit it with cedar.
He told me "Smoking cigars is a journey. Eventually you will find which ones you like".

We sat in the balcony and enjoyed the smoke.

09-04-2010, 12:10 PM
What i understood is that it doesnt affect the taste of the cigar, as it is pure wood.
That is one of the reason not to use matches to light a cigar. Also another no no is the use of zippo lighters. The smell and taste of fuel will get into the cigar.
I tend to use a torch, if not available i will use a piece of cedar.

ToolMan28
09-04-2010, 12:16 PM
I use a torch myself. If I have to use a match I wait till the flame is purely on the stick and no longer burning the tip before I touch the flame to my cigar.

I was a 19 year old Corporal, deployed to the Philippines, and about to lead my first jungle patrol. My Gunny, a 27 year veteran, who smoked these cheap, 5 to a box A&C Grenadiers, stuck one in my mouth saying, Here, this will make you look like you know what you're doing...lol

Being in the Fleet Marines/Expeditionary Forces, port calls worldwide were a fringe benefit, so I experimented, and developed my tastes...

Enjoy!

Bet Partagas still make you think of your Uncle... That is truely a priceless memory... Thank you for sharing your story, i have heard that lighting your smoke with a piece of cedar is one of the traditions, and there is nothing wrong with it in my book, also i have heard it is the cleanest method, cause you light it from a lighter or match, and it has non of the chemical, maybe someone can comment if i am wrong here... Man that is a touching story..thanks again... By the way did you find a favorite?

I have been smoking cigars consistently for the last 3 years, however the first time was back in 2003. Me and 5 buddies set forth down to the condo in Ft. Myers Beach, FL just after we graduated high school. My buddies dad, who arranged the trip, thought it would be nice to treat us to a nice cigar while we played cards the first night. 1 of my buddies was a pro as he was a huge pot head in his school days, so he lit the thing with ease. The rest of us needed proper instruction. I don't recall what type of cigar it was, but do recall it being darker the hell and very very full. Needless to say, within 30 minutes of smoking these cigars, we were sweating like pigs, hacking our lungs out and wondering what the hell we were doing. We thought we were cool playing poker and smoking cigars, so we continued. Shortly there after my buddy had a cough attack from hell that led to massive amounts of spitting to eventually vomiting profusely. It was quite amusing to say the least. I would like to add that I held my own and never puked!! The next morning came around and the only thing that was on our mind were cigars. Luckily, the Tobacco Hut was only a half mile away. We walked in there not knowing what we were looking for, what to expect to pay, or anything. We saw the Heaven Cigar Girls pictures, their calenders, and thought that was the ticket. We each bought a stick, sat outside, smoked them and found ourselves back in there about in a hour later. Fast forward 6 days and you will find 5 kids with no money in their bank accounts as we thought it would be fun to blow all of our money on cigars. About $1,300 later ........ Not joking... between the 5 of us, we were on out last days and could only afford some swisher sweets. I don't recall smoking to many cigars after we got home from our trip but we had a hell of run while we were there!!

It's a funny story and still brings lots of laughs to the table when we are all together.

I'm going to share with you my favorite cigar starting story as told to me by a friend. I wish I can recall his name... I can picture his face, but nothing on his name... (maybe some variation of the white sox or something)

Anyway, a friend of his had a baby and gave him a cigar. Not being a smoker of any tobacco products (yeah, it was necessary to specify tobacco) he graciously took it and tossed it into the glove compartment of his car. Now, while mr sox had not been a tobacco smoker, he did enjoy a hit from time to time with that well known weed with multiple names.
Anyway, many many months later while coming home from work the skies opened up and it was snowing like nobodies business. After several hours on the road making it only half way home and now being at a total standstill while an accident ahead of him was cleared he began to look for something to do. He found his cigar. He removed the "It's a Girl" wrapper, bit the end and using his cars cigarette lighter lit the well aged cigar (and by well I dont mean well).
Now, having only smoked pot before he had no clue how to smoke anything but pot, so like a good joint he drew in a long hard full breath, filled his lungs with ample cigar smoke and held it in. Yes, he got a buzz! With his vision distorting and his arms and legs feeling heavy he proclaimed to himself: "Wow! No wonder people like this stuff. You get high and it's legal!!!"
With that he exhaled fully and took his second long hard enormous drag again filling his lungs and holding it in, that is until he began to convulse and just in time he swung open his door and vomited all over the Mass turnpike.
Now, it would be a wonder if this guy every went near anything that smokes again after that, but it turns out he wondered what he did wrong and around a year later gave it a second try. While he didn't get "high" this time, he did enjoy it so he continued to smoke cigars for years.

For me it was about 11ish years ago. Oliva Dave used to show up at every "man event" with a box of cigars. I typically passed on the offer, but after a long day of drinking at my place I got daring and smoked one...and enjoyed it. Being an IT guy, I went straight to the web, joined CA's forums and started asking questions and taking notes. I bought almost all of the recommended cigars and would drag Dave an later, Jaybouch into trying them out. I became an instant groupie.

Jay, do you know the guy I was speaking about in my last post? He was from GNESO. From New England too.

Old thread but what the heck. I really enjoyed reading the stories.
For me it was all about being out in the yard. I did everything I could think of to keep the bugs away. My yard abuts(sp?) a pond so we get more than our fair share of mosquitos etc. Started out smoking Acid Nasties. After a while i completely forget about the bugs and would light up every evening after dinner - no matter what the season.
Got a hold of a Punch cigar one day and really chugged thru it. Woke up in the lawn after I dont know how long. That taught me to be more selective about not only what I smoke but how fast I smoked it.
P.S. Been at war with the wife ever since.

I started about 3 years ago. I would only have one on a special occasion. Then one day out on the golf course someone gave me a mild one, i think it was a Nat Sherman, and i really enjoyed it. After about a month, i bought my first humidor. A 25 count from a friend with a few cigars in it. When i get into something, i go all out. So a few months later, i needed a 100 count humidor. I was reading a CI catalog and saw the Nubs. Since at the time i really like a big ring gauge cigar, i wanted to try'em. Needless to say i loved them. Then the Cain became my favorite cigar, and i needed a 300count humidor. Then the F!

So now I'm a med-full to full cigar smoker. I can't even enjoy a mild cigar anymore. There are still some cigars out there i would love to try (Opus X, God of Fire, ect.) But I have plenty of time, i'm not going anywhere.

BTW, i'd never had a Mumcero until i meet Jimmie, and i'm glad i did. Its my favorite size now. Jimmie, you're the man!
