View Full Version : A cuban Nub, perhaps?

I don't really know how the thought occurred to me, I wasn't even thinking about cigars at the time, but all of a sudden I was like, "A Cuban Nub? Oh god, it would only be right." So Sam, is there any plans for a Cuban Nub? I wouldn't even be able to get my hands on one (no planned trips to Cuba, no secret contacts, etc.), but it's just one of those answers I need to satiate my curiosity.

I cant speak for Sam, but I would say that a cuban NUb probably isnt gonna happen. I think the NUb Habano is as close as it will get

Matt, No plans on a cuban NUb yet.
This Nicaraguan tobacco is just too darn good to even think about it!

That's fine, I guess it was just one of those wonderful dreams that'll never happen - like partying with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders (a truly lifelong dream).
And I can gladly take your word on the original Nicaraguan Nubs from what I hear from everyone who's already experienced 'em. It's becoming almost unbearable as time ticks closer to April and I see another review from a lucky herfer.

I would have to agree with Sam there. Plus the price would have to go up and that would be a shame.

The Cubans have two cigars which I now class as mini nubs, the Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto, 4" x 50 and the Montecristo Petit Edmundo, 4 1/2" x 52. Both great smoking, the Hoyo is typicall Hoyo, pretty mild for Cuban but very 'sweet' smoking. The Monte is a different blend than the regular and has a more 'refined' smooth character.
You never know they might get it right one day!

I really don't understand the Cuban Tobacco" craziness. I have had so many non-cuban cigars that are fantastic. There are just to many cigars out there that are just as good if not better in my humble opinion.

I'm with you on this as I only smoke a Cuban once in a blue moon, I find the tastes just not as exciting, no where near the flavour mix of non Cubans and just about any cigar from Cuba with a ring gauge of less than 50 is going to be a struggle to draw on, very poor quality control, if any at all.

My understanding is that the US is such a huge tobacco consumer that the embargo basically killed the cuban cigar business. Most of the best tobacco men left cuba for places like nicaragua, miami and the dominican and while the tobacco may not be exactly the same, you're still getting "old cuban" quality out of "new nic/dom" production.
I havent had many cubans at all but I'm told they just aren't the same anymore.

There is so much more than that... Don't forget in much of Europe and other locations you can only get cubans. The US market isn't that important. It has a lot to do with the fact that Castro took over all of the cigar companies and didn't have the right people in place to keep up quality and remain competetive. There is little motivation for anyone to do a good job in Cuba. Not unlike other communist countries.

Yea, that makes sense too. Thanks for sharing, Skip.
I don't think its worth Sam's time to get a cuban NUb in the works... I don't know what the demand for Nub is outside the US but it would suck to create a product you couldn't legally enjoy yourself or share with your closest friends.

I think the biggest problem is that the Cubans have a business that demand exceds supply so in there inexperienced business practice they may well think they are doing well. Why put all that effort into quality control etc when they cant make enough as it is. Pretty poor attitude but thats what you get from a third world country.

when the embargo is lifted what you will see is companies like Oliva, CAO and the other big boys buying tobacco from Cuba and blending it. Look at CAO's international line. They have the Brazilia, Americana, Italia. These cigars are all the same except for some tobacco from that country being added. It's only natural that they will add the Cubano. Maybe form pressure, maybe because of the hype maybe because it is good, we will see new blends being manufactured by our favorite cigar companies. The jury is still out on whether it will be worth it or not. One thing for sure, it will be expensive as the limited tobacco will be highly sought after by these companies in vaste quantities and yet the fields barely produce enough tobacco for the existing cuban brands (without the American market). So how much tobacco do you think Cuba will begin importing form Honduras, Nicaragua and Dominican Republic? (& Italy, Brazil & America!)

Interesting thoughts and who knows what the Cubans shall do. I would think that after the embargo, then with a few more dollars they would be able to cultivate more land, actually have the ability to purchase fertilizers etc and grow more leaf. They then shall have to begin a quality control issue in, but I beleive that as long as the demand exceeds supply things wont change that much.

Cubans are good don't get me wrong, but I think a lot of it is "you want what you can't have"....
But if/when the trade opens back up, I will be right in line with everyone else to get me some!

But its still amazing how many of your fellow countrymen only smoke Cuban cigars, its nearly the biggest part of my cigar business. Strange thing, made in Cuba, shipped to Austalia and then back to the U.S. nearly a full circle.

I agree... a guy once told me "for every woman you are drooling over there's a guy who is tired of her and can't wait to get rid of her"
