View Full Version : Habano still my favorite

All:
After having my sampler pack settle into the humidor for a bit, I did two "taste tests." The first was a Nub Camaroon. Tasty, yes. It lived up to the Nub mission of having a great taste all the way through. As I said before, I tried it along with drinking a Yuenling B&T. Yesterday, I continued on the taste test with a Nub Connecticut. Seems a bit more flavorful than the Cameroon. I drank a Sam Adams Octoberfest and a Peroni. I also sat down to a nice dish of seafood linguini at a place called Landinis in Old Town Alexandria, VA. Then I returned to my Habano 460 today, but this time with sweetened coffee. The Habano: smooth, sweet, and tasty. I know this is a personal thing but I'm settled. Habano it is for me! P.S. I tried to create a Nub stand but I "lost my ash" 3/4 of the way down. Ha!

HA! :D I just tried my first Nub stand with a Habano 464 and right after setting up the "stage", I had just finished standing it on a 1911 mag. next to a one of my .45 ACP Kimber's (unique and kinda cool set up) a breeze hit it and knocked it over!! I tried with a Cameroon but I messed up and knocked that one off. I was pissed 'cause it was a really nice ash! And who can resist a nice ash? :D
However, I wish my experience with my 1st Habano wasn't as good as yours.
I pulled a 4 shot macchiato and had high hopes. I'm learning that anything I pick up at my local B&M needs to rest in the humidor for a while.
Draw was very tight and it actually ended up going out after quite a bit if work up 'til then. So after a re-light, I cut even more which helped but although the draw was easier, it was almost smokeless. I finally figured I couldn't mess it up any more so I cut it way up, almost to the "shoulder" if a torpedo has a shoulder. Draw was much better but it was still a lot of work to get much, and it got hot. Now where near as good as the Cameroon burned, although it was just not for me.
I suspected the Habano would be a little too much for me, but I have to admit, I didn't mind the hard work on this on because I could tell, there was more to it.
So for now the Connecticut is my go-to. I'll try the Habano again, but I think I'll stay away from the torpedo; I'm not much of a torpedo fan anyway.
Nub's are addicting!! More than a smoke; they're fun.
Thanks for adding the pairing as well. It might be fun to start a pairing thread and see what pairings others find enjoyable.

I'm learning that anything I pick up at my local B&M needs to rest in the humidor for a while.Yeah, that's quite usual. Most of them tend to overhumidify. I bet that's why you had a tight draw. I never had a NUb with tight draw so far. Give it another try after having them sleep in your humi for 3 weeks or more.

I have more of a problem with them being dry. I think consistency is a bigger problem. Especially since the NUBs are high on the racks, near their humidifier. Usually, I've got to be really careful cutting or punching anything that's within week or so old. Although it s new store, the door to the humidor sticks open. I'm always pulling or pushing it shut when I walk in or out, where as others, including employees just leave it open.
Live and learn. Pay a premium to test and try but I'll have to let them rest. Then buy online and near half the cost and get stick tumbled in shipping and show up in better shape. :D

The Habano is my favorite also. That might change once the Miami NUB and the Maduro NUB come out. As to a NUB stand, I have tried and succeeded twice. Once while playing poker with my friends and just recently at a pool hall. It was pretty cool, everyone was coming over to look at it until some guy bumped the table and it fell over.

The Habano is still my favorite and I smoked one while hanging out with some buddies this past weekend. I drank a Michelob Pale Ale as I smoked and I wouldn't recommend the pairing mostly because of the bitterness of the cigar compared to the sweetness of the cigar, they didn't exactly compliment each other. As for the stand, I definitely tried one, and it was going well, resting upon the horseshoe stake and then a damn breeze blew in as I tried to take the picture. Needless to say, the cigar didn't survive, but luckily I got a good pic of Brian's nubstand. I'll post it soon, I promise.

The Cammies have the same effect on me, although it happens when I smoke almost any cigar, but it's the strongest when i smoke the Cammy.

Maybe the cammy is too mild for you guys and you are smoking it too viciously.

Tough luck with the Habano. I really like the habano, and the Connie the best. Nothing wrong with the Cammy just a personal choice, Beale.

OK, so you had to bring up the Miami and maduro again. So, how much longer do we have to wait for these things. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

I have some more of all 3 coming in this week and I'm curious and anxious to try again. I know I've found the same cigar will be very different to me depending on the time of day, my mood, if I've got an empty stomach, what I've ate or drank and of course what I'm drinking at the time. And of course as you pointed out, how rushed we are at the time. I've found self rushing before and realize how I'm not really enjoying it at the time.

I talked about my first experience of the Habano in another thread. I mentioned how the Habano was not my cup of tea because I got that #2 pencil smell. Well now I have finished my 4th and final Habano in my humi and my thoughts have changed. I only had that experience with the first one, and it was straight out of the box. Every couple of days I tried another Habano, and each one became more smooth, more mellow, and I no longer got that #2 pencil smell. So maybe they just needed a few days to sit before they were ready to smoke and now I can't wait to get some more.
The point I wanted to make was that I guess you can't really just smoke one. Like the potato chip commercial. Maybe try that cigar 2,3, even 4 different times before you make a final decision on that cigar. Ha Ha, maybe there should be a 5 pack rule. A review should be made only after sampling a 5 pack of that particular cigar.

This is great news! See....you just got a bad stick, or the smokes needed a few days to rest! I'm glad your opinion of the Habano has changed, it really is a GREAT smoke :nub:

Yes, definitely glad you enjoy them now. I never smoke a cigar straight from the packaging if I've received them via the mail. I let them rest in the humidor for a few days at least. They need time to get the right humidity level.

Last night I smoked a Habano from my 5 pack that I won on Cigarbid last week. It had rested in my humi, at about 67%, for about 5 days. It was a very good smoke, burned even, smooth yet strong, nutty, and delicious. I'll post pictures tonight when i get home.

dave, what do you do for humidification in your humis? I just bought another one, from tampa humidor, and was wondering a good cheap way to keep is 67-70. I use boveda packs in my other one but having to buy 6 packs every 2 months will get expensive
maverick21383
04-08-2009, 09:37 PM
Yeah, I used to use those packs but then I tried the tubes of crystals, and they were nice at first, but they're a little small. Now I use the Humi-care crystals. It's $10 and i just put distilled water in about once a month. That and my two tubes kept my humidor around 58% during the extremely dry winter, and now it's at a steady 68%. I love them, very easy. In fact, I have them in two of my humidors and I ordered it for my new one.

Well just remember summer is just around the corner and the humidity will increase greatly. Don't over humidify your NUBS.
maverick21383
04-09-2009, 12:09 PM
Yeah, I'll probably take a tube out, but the beauty of the crystals is that they'll hold the humidity at the right level, so even in the summer, they don't over humidify.

So I gave a buddy at work a Habano 460 and a Cameroon 460 to try out while he was golfing sunday. Here's his response:
"They were awesome! The Habano was great...more mild than the other one...like a good Porter compared to a thick-ass Stout. Delish! Thanks again!"
Looks like we have another Nubber on our hands. I told him about the site so hopefully he'll be on. Also, he is a really good artist, thought I would share some of his work with you guys.

Mav, I noticed nothing was said about your golf game, should I just draw my own conclusions? Your friend really thought the cammy was stronger than the habano?
maverick21383
04-21-2009, 12:02 PM
Well, I didn't go golfing with him. In fact, I've never been golfing before, just not a sport that interests me, but I figured I would let him experience the Nubs for himself and on a warm, sunny, beautiful sunday afternoon on the golf course, i can't imagine much better of a chance for him.
I actually agree with him, I find the Cammy to be much stronger than the Habano. Weird how different palates react differently.

Way awesome dude! I have been spreading some Nub love too. I have been to a couple of parties while on leave, and I'll pull out a nub. Someone will always come up and start talking. I let them choose their flavor. Usually they will go for the lighter wrapper (Connie) or the thick guy (Habano). I get nothing but the best comments about Nub Cigars. One guy, I had never met before, and we got into such a conversation, he started asking me for my business card. He just wouldn't believe that I was just another Joe enjoying a good cigar. He asked me how much I wanted for it. I told hime NOTHING!, but if you have internet to jump on nublive.com and get to know the guys. Everyone is awesome and friendly.
There is only one place that I can find in Des Moines that sells Nub and that is in the Mall. I'm trying to get the local tabacco outlet to stock them. I gave the general manager for the store a Connie, and told her all about the product line. Sooooo well see!

Ha Ha, that would be cool. I think the first thing that needs to be done here is to get more people smoking! I'm sure there are already a lot of people around here enjoying cigars, but it isn't as noticable in Des Moines like it is other states. There are small closet Humidors at the Tabacco Outlets, and of course the one at the Mall is the biggest, but nothing like the one I went into in Kansas City.
There is one place that I have heard about in West Des Moines, have not gotten to check it out yet, but I think they have an "everything by 10" theme. They supposedly have a sit and smoke room, but I don't want to buy 10 at a time. I would like to try 1 first.

I'm with you on that. I am heading up to Brian's house tomorrow after work, I'm considering smoking one. We'll see, I may just smoke something else. I got a new Humidor and I want to stock it full of Nubs in the next couple months, I may have to hold onto the few I have.
